Deck Design

Deck design has some of the same issues as patio design. The placement of your deck may be elementary and obvious or not. Good deck design plans size, shape, and layout before you dig a post hole. Do this, and you'll reap the benefits for years.

Placement

If you're building a deck, chances are you plan on grilling out there. Building the deck by the kitchen is a smart move. Proximity to the kitchen is probably the primary consideration for deck placement, if you plan to grill out.

Outside your bedroom suite would be a great place for a deck, too. Imagine lazy Saturday mornings there with your coffee cup and your toes up. You'd just need space for a couple of chairs, an end table, and maybe a potted plant.

It's easy to forget, but decks don't have to be attached to the house. A low deck is an interesting addition in the center of a garden. It defines a space much like an area rug does in your home. If you own a large, flat lot, this would be one way to create interesting levels.

You also should design the posts that hold up the deck. Will they be blocking lower level windows and patio doors? The view can be ruined by a big post. If you've got a walk-out basement, this will be especially important for you.

Modifying the placement of the posts just a few feet can mean all the difference. Also, look at where your stairs are going to be. Make sure that both upper and lower areas flow well, and you'll have a deck design that will be outstanding to live in.

TIP

Don't block views on a lower level.

Size

How big is too big? How will you know if your deck is too small? Your furniture will play a big role.

If you've got a large furniture set, measure the length and width of the table and add three feet around for the chairs. Add an additional three feet so that people can walk behind the chairs.

I don't think I've ever heard of anyone wishing they had made their deck 'just a little smaller'. Consider that when you're planning, and don't build your deck too small.

If you want a really large entertainment deck, you may want to break it up into more than one level. This would keep it interesting, but still leave you lots of space.

Again, consider the furniture -- will you have a lot of tables? Picnic tables with benches may take up slightly less room than a large table and chairs.

For extra seating, some decks have built-in benches around the edge. It's a great way to have seating available but out of the way. Another charming addition is the built-in countertops. If they are near the grill, they have the added bonus of extra space for the chef.

Style & Shape

A large deck will feel spacious, but unless it has smaller 'areas' within, it may lack intimacy. A deck with all squared corners may feel slightly more formal than one with some curves in it. Curves may raise the cost, though, so consider that when planning.

A modern deck design shines with streamlined and sleek railing materials. Today's spindle choices include transparent panels that won't block your view, aluminum spindles that add a bit of shine, and, of course, the traditional wood railing.

Aluminum spindles and transparent panels feel light compared to wood. And, wood isn't just wood -- there are many railing designs that are a great accent to a deck and they're made from wood. Just make sure that they follow local codes.

The top of the posts can be raised above the railing. This could be where you install lighting or a decorative cap, but tall posts should be planned, too. Don't just make the taller posts a 'rule' unless it's a part of the look that you want. You could just have taller posts at the corners with lighting. Then, they're a softer accent.

If your deck is very low, you may not need to install railing at all. This would eliminate the visual barrier to the rest of the garden. It would also make it feel more like a patio.

Finally, when considering your deck design, think about the color. Pulling a color from your house is a great way to coordinate. If you're a bit daring, you could try two colors and fancy wood patterns on the floor.

Ideas

There are a lot of great ideas for decks. Some of my favorites:

*Design a deck around a tree (or boulders!)
*Give a hot tub a custom 'built in' look
*Built in planters
*Medallians in the floor decking
*Built in benches (great for entertaining!)
*Run the deck boards in an interesting pattern
*Lighting -- including step lighting
