Fall Plants for Zone 4 Eau Claire, Wisconsin
Fall plants give us a splash of color before winter comes upon us. If you've planned your garden well, you'll have interesting plants for every season. Here's my list for fall.
Red Maple / Acer rubrum
55' high x 45' wide, Full - Part Sun
Possibly the reddest Maple for fall color. There are several varieties including 'Autumn Spire' and 'Northwood'
Sugar Maple / Acer saccharum
80' high x 60' wide, Full - Part Sun
Is another beautiful Maple for fall. The color may vary, but is mostly a golden orange/red.
Sweet Autumn Clematis / Clematis x 'Paniculata' / Clematis 'Terniflora'
10' high x 3' wide, Full - Part Sun
An autumn blooming vine that is worth the wait. Just remember that Clematis likes cool roots. Shade them with another plant and give them extra mulch. Eastern exposure seems best for this one.
Cranberry Cotoneaster / Cotoneaster apiculatus
3' high x 5' wide, Full - Part Sun
Bright red berries make this shrub a late season treat.
Dwarf Burning Bush / Euonymus alatus 'Compacta'
6' high x 5' wide, Full - Part Sun
If planted in full sun, this shrub will reward you with amazingly bright leaves in the fall.
Ginkgo / Ginkgo biloba
60' high x 40' wide, Full Sun
Bright, clear yellow leaves in the fall have the distinctive shape of the Ginkgo.
PeeGee Hydrangea / Hydrangea paniculata 'Grandiflora'
9' high x 9' wide, Full - Part Sun
An obvious choice for those of us who love to bring an armful of the blooms indoors for our tabletops.
Huge, long-lasting blooms eventually turn from a clean white to a dusky pink. Because it does 'double-duty' as a great cutting plant, this is one of my favorite fall plants.
Harvest Gold Crabapple / Malus 'Hargozam'
20' high x 15' wide, Full Sun
I like that this plant has golden fruits for fall. A nice variation.
Goldflame Spirea / Spiraea x bumalda 'Goldflame'
4' high x 3' wide, Full Sun
A three-season plant, this shrub leafs out red in spring gradually turning a golden yellow. In the fall, it's the reverse -- turning a beautiful golden orange. The summer flowers are icing on the cake.
Autumn Jazz Viburnum / Viburnum dentatum 'Ralph Senior'
12' high x 10' wide, Full Sun
Ok, so the name would tip you off. Another nice display of autumn color in shades of orange and red.
Purple Dome Aster / Aster novae-angliae 'Purple Dome'
2' high x 2' wide, Full - Part Sun
This perennial has long-lasting flowers in a season when the summer bloomers are done.
Silver Feather Grass / Miscanthus sinensis 'Silver Feather'
6.5' high x 4' wide, Full Sun
The feathery plumes of this perennial grass arrive in the fall and can stay until early spring. Cut just above the ground before new grass starts in spring.
*ALWAYS check your plant tags. Especially look at the amount of sun needed and the mature size of the plant.
If you were frustrated with Fall, I hope that this list gave you some great ideas. With a little research, you can find even more great fall plants.
