Flower Garden Design So Many Plant Choices!
The flower garden design excitement begins in plant choices. Now that you've got some sources, here's the basics.
Plant Choice
Annuals or perennials? Perennial flowers come back every year. That's why I love perennial gardens. A great perennial garden will have waves of color and different things happening every season.
Annuals are great for year-long color. If you are looking for staying power, consider some areas for annuals. If you're concerned about having to redo large areas, save annuals for the spots that need big impact -- like the driveway entrance or front door.
Even better, save the annuals for container gardens. Place them near the front door. Your guests will love it.
Container gardens are a great way to get a big splash of color.
Consider the colors in your garden. Whether you're designing a perennial garden, a cutting garden, a mixed border, or a rose garden, the colors of your garden make a big difference in the overall look.
TIP: Start with your house colors. Look at your siding, trim, and door colors. Compliment the house colors with your plant choices.
Also, look at the textures. Textures? Yes. When I walk through beautiful gardens, some of the leaves and grasses make me want to run my fingers through them. The perennials with clouds of tiny flowers like Baby's Breath look so soft. The huge, dramatic leaves of Hosta are amazing. Compare textures of plants that you like. How do they look side-by-side?
Finally, form or shape in your flower garden design is another element that can be overlooked. If all of your plants have the same, rounded shape, it will be boring. Maybe that's why grasses are so popular. They've got a great shape, they're easy to grow, and the texture is different from many plants.
Flower garden design takes a bit of time, but the results are worth it. Whether you're planning your garden pots for a container garden or are redoing your entire front yard, take the time to make it beautiful.
