How to Create Memorial Gardens

Memorial gardens keep memories of a loved one close by. A special relative, a friend, or even a beloved pet could have a special area that honors their memory. Following are some basic tips to help you create your garden space.

Framing Your Space

If your garden is set apart it will help everyone to know the area is special. Choose a wall, fence, or hedge to frame the area. Plants are the easiest solution.

If you choose plants to frame your space, they don't have to be a solid hedge. Choose a few different varieties of plants and encircle the area. Plan how they will work together before you dig.

Focal Points

Consider if you will be choosing a focal point. Is there a piece of statuary that is meaningful to you? Multiple focal points can also be used, but plan them well. Special statuary does best when it can withstand all four seasons.

Another way to dedicate your garden is with a small plaque. Create a note about your loved one in bronze with a year of dedication. Attach that bronze plaque to a boulder in front of a tree planted in their honor. Very simple and meaningful.

Layout

Memorial gardens are easiest to create in one of two ways. First, as an inward-focused garden. This is where you can place a bench or build a bench wall and have a quiet moment. It might have a small patio area, also.

Pathway gardens are another option. These gardens are meant to look outward as you walk along a path. A small garden space between two other areas might have a path. You can make it special with a entry and exit point -- like a gate.

Special Touches

Did your loved one have a favorite plant? Were they fond of birds? Perhaps your garden would attract birds.

A still pool of water would not only reflect light and attract birds, but would be a meaningful addition. Plan for seating nearby.

Roses are a sentimental flower and yellow roses have always been about remembering. Shrub roses are a little easier to grow in Wisconsin. Unlike tea roses, you won't have to protect them in the winter.

Your loved one made an impact in your life. Plan the memorial garden well. Special touches and thoughtfulness will make it beautiful for years to come.
