Outdoor Area Rugs 5 Steps to Select Your Perfect Rug
I love outdoor area rugs. Just like indoor rugs, they can define a sitting area, make a statement, and add color. Outdoor rugs also make the outdoors feel a little more like the indoors.
1) Location
TIPLocation? The children's playroom! The breakfast nook! Why? Outdoor rugs are easy to clean, and many are stain resistant.
If you're looking for an outdoor rug, know that they can go wherever you place your furniture. Dress up your deck! A deck that is one large space will have added interest with an area rug.
The front porch will feel like an extension of your home with the perfect rug.
Not only that, but what about your gazebo? Simple teak benches on the outside would frame a rug beautifully, so make sure it's special.
A patio is a perfect spot for an outdoor rug, too. If you plan to update your patio, but the installation isn't happening fast enough -- get a great patio rug. Perfect for parties, your family and friends feel comfortable indoors and out.
The sunroom or even the balcony off your master suite would be perfect for a patio rug. If you've got a balcony or a small garden and want to make it special, this could do it.
2) Placement
Make sure you measure before you purchase. Is there anything in the way like columns?
Get out your furniture! I've often said that if you want an idea of how large to build your patio, get out the furniture and arrange it. Seems simple, but I've seen countless decks and patios that are just too small.
So, go to where you've got your outdoor furniture and decide how you would like your area rug to sit. If you have a large arrangement (like a sofa, chairs, and a coffee table), you may want only the front legs of the furniture to sit on the rug.
If you've got a sweet little bistro set, the entire set could sit on the area rug. A small dining table and chairs could also completely sit on the area rug. It's up to you, but do consider placement before you buy.
3) Focal Point
What's the focal point in your space? I've got to ask because there are some show-stopping outdoor rugs out there. Personally, I do gravitate towards bold and beautiful. However, if you've already got some great furniture that is sure to stand out, don't choose a rug that will be just as bold. It will be a case of 'too much'.
So, the quick and easy test is if the furniture is plain and subdued, splash a bold area rug underneath. If your furniture is bright and patterned, a simple rug might be the thing for you.
4) ShapeThe most common shape for an area rug is rectangular, but that shouldn't stop you.
I like a round rug under a round dining table. Round outdoor area rugs are also great for round rooms -- like your gazebo? Leave 3" of floor space around the rug. It will give a 'border' to the space and make for easier cleaning.
Rectangular or square rugs are really versatile. Use them in an outdoor living room space. Brighten up the front porch, or make a statement.
5) Materials
The most common materials for outdoor area rugs are Polypropylene and Duracord. If you're searching for a natural material, sisal has been around for years. Not only that, but what about brick pavers? Absolutely!
A gorgeous way to dress up your patio is with an inset paver 'rug'.
When considering materials, you might want to look at the maintenance. How will you be able to clean your rug? You want it to last a long time, so care is important. Many outdoor area rugs just need a vacuum or -- even better -- a hose. Talk about easy clean up!
Modern, country, French -- whatever your style, a great outdoor area rug can bring that something that you've been missing. Plus, they're so effortless!
