Furniture Future?

Many people are redesigning their outdoors or having a landscape design done now -- and I love it. One thing that sometimes gets overlooked, though, is outdoor furniture. Like garden art, furniture should be carefully chosen to reinforce the 'look' of your garden.

When I design outdoor spaces, every plant, every art piece is chosen to compliment the theme or style of the garden. Modern is bold and clean. Contemporary sparkles. English or French -- no matter what your style is, your furniture (and artwork) should be the exclamation point on the end, not the question mark.

What's your furniture future? Maybe you've just realized what's been missing in your garden. If your furniture just 'resides' in your garden, think of what might be the right collection of pieces for you.

Function

When you're planning your outdoor living furniture, think about what you'll need for function. This could mean anything from chaise lounges for the poolside furniture -- a must, I think -- to a little bench near the vegetable garden.

New outdoor kitchens might need a set of barstools pulled up to the countertop. If they're in the same area, have them coordinate with the dining set. Consider, too, if you'll need an umbrella with the dining table.

To really pull the indoors out, consider an outdoor living room set. You'll quickly find that a great space will have you making excuses to be out there. Family parties? No problem. Invite everyone you want -- a garden is a great place to entertain.

Fun

Furniture is one more place that you can really make a statement. An outstanding bench can be a functional conversation piece. Everyone will quickly realize that you're not afraid to stand out if you choose an unusual modern chair.
